We are excited to announce that Dr. Jamie Jones has been awarded the 2020 Fred Osborn Award for Excellence in Emergency Medicine! The Fred Osborn Award is presented annually by the Indiana American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) to “a Hoosier emergency physician who has shown excellence in EM through their leadership, involvement, and contributions to their emergency medicine group, hospital, community and state.”
As an assistant dean for graduate medical education and a professor of clinical emergency medicine, Jamie has a longstanding record of mentoring, teaching, and leadership both in and outside of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Jamie held multiple leadership roles during his time with the IU School of Medicine, including serving as vice chair for our department from 2001 to 2013, chair of the IUSM Clinical Track Promotion Committee, member of the Curriculum Council Steering Committee, chair of the Resident as Teacher Advisory Panel, chair of the GME Wellness Advisory Panel. His national presence has been longstanding, most notably leading the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) in numerous roles including president, BOD, senior editor for the LLSA examination, and continues to serve as an oral board examiner.
Dr. Peter Pang, interim chair of Emergency Medicine, reinforces Jamie’s commitment to teaching and mentorship: “Teaching comes naturally to Dr. Jones, and his passion for educating our learners and faculty is always evident. He has served as a faculty advisor to numerous medical students and residents during his time in the department. Initiatives such as faculty advisor for medical students, faculty mentoring task force, and lifelong learning competency committee all demonstrate his commitment to mentoring others.” Dr. Dan Rusyniak, professor of emergency medicine and Chief Medical Officer, Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, echoes this, “Dr. Jones is the personal embodiment of professionalism. To watch and listen to him in the department is to witness someone who has perfected their craft. Whether in the office, in the workroom, or at the beside, he has taught countless students, residents, and colleagues the value of listening, encouragement, and reassurance. Medicine, Indiana, and IU are better for the care, lessons, and leadership he has provided throughout his career."

Jamie helped shape me into the ER doc I am today…By training all of us (and training the people who trained us!) he has touched the lives of countless patients across the country. He has also shaped our specialty as a whole, through his leadership of [the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)] and other roles.

I actually started working as one of the inaugural scribes at Methodist in 1989, and worked there all through medical school, as well as the Extern program the St. Francis group had at Beech Grove the following year while Jamie was the Medical Director. He was a great influence during those years, and he took the position of Associate Residency Director at Methodist before the match in 1993. Compared to my classmates I am sure I was the academic runt of the litter, but am equally sure Jamie lobbied for my ranking in that class. I was pretty much under his tutelage from 1989 through 1996. Of course, I probably needed a more lengthy training than most. Needless to say there probably hasn’t been a larger influence on my career than Jamie, and I probably owe a debt to Jamie and Carey that can’t be repaid. So well deserved, congratulations and big hug.

Congratulations Jamie! I had the honor of training with Jamie and then working my first years in private practice with Fred as a mentor.
