One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. The department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

Education
The department offers a PhD in Medical and Molecular Genetics, a combined MD/PhD degree, MS degree in Medical and Molecular Genetics with an optional emphasis in genetic counseling, and fellowship training in clinical and laboratory medicine.

Research interests of the Medical and Molecular Genetics faulty and genetic counselors encompass a variety of medical and educational topics in genetics. Areas of study include computational biology, neuroscience, musculoskeletal and cancer research.

Professor of Medical & Molecular Genetics
Clair Francomano, MD, has been involved in the care of individuals with the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes throughout her career. During her years at the National Institutes of Health, she spear-headed a longitudinal study on the natural history of EDS that ran for over 20 years.

The White laboratory focuses on the molecular genetics of diseases associated with hyper- and hypophosphatemia and the resulting skeletal disease with a particular focus on the bone hormone FGF23 and interactions with its co-receptor alpha-Klotho (aKL).

Housed in the IU School of Medicine Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, the Indiana University Genetic Testing Laboratories is a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development. An extensive menu of highly complex and unique medical tests are available through these facilities in the specialties of cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, pharmacogenomics and molecular genetics. All laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and certified by CLIA.
