During its June meeting, the IU Board of Trustees approved an updated post-tenure review policy (BOT-24) that includes several changes over the previous version. Here’s what you need to know:
The changes
1. The performance-rating option “exceeds expectations” was removed.
Faculty who are being evaluated during post-tenure reviews will only be able to receive one of the following ratings:

The faculty member will be placed on a 12-month performance improvement plan and may be subject to dismissal. |
| Unsatisfactory | The faculty member received “does not meet expectations” for two or more annual reviews in the past five years without successful completion of a PIP. | The faculty member may be subject to dismissal at the end of the academic year. |
Prior to this revision, there had been an option for “exceeds expectations,” as well.
2. The faculty requirement to create one-page mission summaries has changed.
Faculty members who have received an annual review rating of meets or exceeds expectations for the past five annual reviews no longer need to prepare one-page mission-area summaries for research, teaching and service.
Following five positive annual reviews, these faculty will only need to:
- Submit an updated CV
- Designate their workload allocation in Elements
- Complete the teaching details that are required by state law, including teaching workload, number of students taught and time spent on instructional activities. These data must be entered in Elements.
Faculty members who have received one or more “does not meet expectations” rating on an annual review in the prior five years will have to submit the one-page mission-area summaries in addition to the three items in the bulleted list above.
Department chairs will still provide each faculty member’s annual reviews for the prior five years as part of the post-tenure review process. This has not changed.
3. Language surrounding performance improvement plans has been clarified.
The updated policy clarifies that faculty whose annual or post-tenure review outcomes require completion of a performance improvement plan have 12 months from the review date to complete the plan.
It also clarifies that completing the PIP effectively clears the “does not meet expectations” rating from the faculty member’s performance-review history.
