The Department of Pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine offers 18 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited fellowship programs. Each program is designed to help pediatricians develop academic leadership roles in their respective field and develop expert clinical, teaching and research skills. Pediatric fellowship programs at IU offer a high faculty-to-fellow ratio, a collegial atmosphere, and an emphasis on inquiry and scholarship. Personalized scholarship oversight committees and supportive mentorship from faculty physicians help fellows capitalize on their own professional development. Departmental fellowship seminars promote cross-specialty education and peer networking.

Currently educating 63 pediatric fellows, the fellowship programs attract physicians from all over the country. Many candidates come from Mid-American residency programs. “Out of the 23 recent graduating fellows, 10 remained at IU, three went to an additional fellowship program and the remaining 10 went to various hospitals and universities across the country," shared Courtney Rowan, MD, vice chair of education and associate professor of pediatrics at the IU School of Medicine.

With an incredible partnership with Riley Children’s Health, IU School of Medicine fellows have access to state-of-the-art equipment. From a simulation center to inpatient units and hospital spaces, fellows have a unique opportunity to serve some of Indiana’s most vulnerable populations, both rural and urban.

The pediatric fellowship programs offer a wide range of research opportunities. From research symposiums and poster presentations to working alongside world-renowned scientists in our Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research, fellows have numerous opportunities to engage with basic, clinical, translational and health-services research. Fellows with a strong interest in research could simultaneously complete a master’s degree in clinical research or in translational science through the IU School of Medicine’s Graduate Division

Location plays a tremendous role in the IU School of Medicine community. Having a walkable and bikeable city is a huge plus. Living and working downtown while being able to afford everyday essentials is among one of the most discussed perks from faculty and fellows. Local attractions like the Indianapolis 500 and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, as well as vibrant neighborhoods like Fountain Square and Broad Ripple and nearby suburbs of Fishers and Carmel, make Indianapolis a great destination, one which many end up calling home years after their fellowship has concluded.

Most of all, it’s the people who define the success of IU’s fellowship programs. With inspiring faculty, dedicated staff and a community of supportive mentors and peers, IU creates an environment that sets its fellowships apart and helps every fellow feel at home.
