The Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine has earned accreditation for its new Bloomington-based Internal Medicine Residency.

The accreditation from the ACGME's Review Committee for Internal Medicine is the culmination of years of hard work by the Department of Medicine to add a fifth internal medicine residency to its medical education offerings.

Under the direction of Michael Wilson, MD, PhD, MBA, CPE, the Bloomington internal medicine residency program will be based at the collocated IU Health Bloomington Hospital and the IU Regional Academic Health Center. This 700,000-square-foot complex positions a sprawling academic building, housing a variety of health sciences programs and a state-of-the-art simulation center, alongside a new, 365-bed hospital that includes a level 3 trauma center, cancer center, stroke and STEMI center, and a nursing magnet hospital.

The proximity allows medical students, residents and the more than 350 adjunct IU faculty members to meet easily in clinical and classroom settings, all within a few miles of the iconic IU Bloomington campus.

“We are thrilled to have earned accreditation from the ACGME,” Wilson said. “Our dedicated team of faculty members has worked hard to craft a curriculum that will keep learners motivated and engaged while showing off the best that Bloomington and the entire Southern region has to offer. I’m grateful to them and am eager to now move into the next phase of our program’s development.”

IU School of Medicine offers residency and fellowship programs in some of Indiana’s most livable cities as part of a unique statewide educational system that gives trainees a variety of clinical and academic environments to meet different styles, needs and interests.

Bloomington offers a traditional college campus with all the trappings of a Big Ten learning environment; and the close working relationship with IU Health will provide residents with outstanding training opportunities in a variety of clinical contexts.

An enthusiastic leadership team is now ready to welcome the first class of residents who match into the program. They have outlined an approach to clinical training that mirrors the hospital’s team-based environment and emphasizes solid patient-care continuity.

Residents will have the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population. During ambulatory blocks, they’ll gain exposure to other medical specialties, like sports medicine, addiction medicine and psychiatry.

While most training will take place in Bloomington, residents will have the opportunity to travel to the nearby IU Health Bedford Hospital and IU Health Paoli Hospital – located 30 miles and 45 miles south of Bloomington, respectively – where they may gain additional experiences in a rural healthcare setting.

“For generations, our department has been at the forefront of medical education in Indiana and beyond, particularly in the area of residency training and experiences. I am proud to now be expanding this rich educational history to the Bloomington campus,” said Department Chair David Aronoff, MD, FIDSA, FAAM, FRCP.

The Department of Medicine currently offers four internal medicine residency programs that provides exceptional comprehensive training in internal medicine, preparing graduates for further either subspecialty training and positions as hospitalist or primary care physicians. They are: the Indianapolis Internal Medicine Residency; the combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency (also in Indianapolis); the Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency in Evansville; and the Internal Medicine Residency at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
