We train Indiana’s doctors. We transform care through revolutionary research. And for more than a century, we have been essential for healthy Hoosiers. Now, Indiana University School of Medicine needs room to grow, innovate, and teach. Our new home in Indianapolis will be equipped with the classrooms, labs, technology, and expertise to uncover answers to medicine’s most challenging problems.
When completed, the new building will sit southwest of 16th Street and Senate Avenue, easily visible from Interstate 65. It will also cozy up to Goodman Hall and the Neuroscience Research Building to the north and IU Health’s new hospital nearby to the east.
IU remains the nation’s largest medical school, even before expanding enrollment in 2007. However, it has not built a new educational space in Indianapolis in six decades. How we teach doctors has evolved. Today, strategies and technologies demand flexible space and communities that help future physicians thrive.
At more than 326,000 square feet, the building gives ample room for research to ease patients’ suffering, improve their quality of life, and help them live longer. Our federal research support has doubled in recent years–but not our space. An 8-story research tower provides faculty with room for research, collaboration and breakthroughs.
IU Health will consolidate the operations of two hospitals into the state’s largest medical facility. When it opens, most of our faculty will practice there. Our new building’s proximity will also put students just a short walk away from clinical experiences, as well as their mentors. The school’s research will also be near the patients who need it. In short, we will create a revitalized medical district.
Rising north of downtown Indianapolis, the new Medical Education and Research Building at IU School of Medicine is being built with a single purpose—to improve health. Here, we will train new generations of physicians and use research to revolutionize care.
