Bio

Shaoyou Chu, MD, PhD, a cell biologist by training, has more than 30 years research experience in cellular sciences and drug discovery. Dr. Chu has served on the IUSM faculty for more than ten years across two distinct periods: from 1998 to 2003 as an Assistant Scientist and Assistant Professor of Physiology, and from 2020 to 2026 as a Senior Research Professor of Medicine in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology. Between these appointments, he held research positions at other institutions and at Eli Lilly, where he focused on drug discovery. Across his career, Dr. Chu has been a remarkably productive scientist whose contributions span academic discovery, industrial drug development, and translational innovation. Dr. Chu has authored over seventy scientific publications.

Dr. Chu led the investigative cellular pharmacology lab of the IUSM-Purdue TREAT-AD Center supporting efforts on Alzheimer’s Disease Drug Discovery of the Center (2020-2026). The cellular pharmacology lab established a number of high throughput cell assays to measure molecule target engagement, efficacy (on signaling pathways or phenotypic changes) and toxicity, which allowed data driven decision making for drug discovery projects of the TREAT-AD center. Dr. Chu retired on May 1, 2026; will continue consulting on drug discovery research projects.
