Bio
Dr. Anthony Shanks is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate degree at Purdue University and obtained a Master of Science from Indiana University. He graduated medical school from Indiana University (Class of 2003) before completing OBGYN Residency and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis where he served as Residency Program Director. He has also completed a Master of Education in Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics and Analysis from the University of Illinois-Chicago. He returned to Indiana University in 2015 where he served as the Director of Outreach and the Residency Program Director for the Department of OBGYN. He is the Vice Chair of Education for the Department of OBGYN and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Director. He was also the co-faculty lead for the recent LCME accreditation visit at IUSM. His teaching philosophy is that learners acquire information best in a safe and engaging learning environment and leverages technology to maximize results.
He has a passion for mentorship and serves as the Director of Career Mentoring for Indiana School of Medicine to help all students across all disciplines. He has led national meeting workshops on integrating technology into the educational experience at the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Program Director School, Society of Reproductive Medicine and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Annual Clinical Meeting. He has served on the Education Committee for both CREOG and Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and is an Advisor for the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Scholars and Leaders Program. A past member of the APGO Board of Directors, he approaches all aspects of education with a scholarly lens.

Dr. Shanks’ clinical research interests focus on optimizing medical care for complicated pregnancies. A recent study evaluated the need for antibiotics after cesarean delivery in those with chorioamnionitis. Other projects investigated the importance of ultrasound findings associated with aneuploidy.
As an educator, his interests are in training our next generation of students and physicians. Projects have included OB simulation for teaching as well as identifying the best method of disseminating material in larger teaching settings.
Dr. Shanks’ practice philosophy is to use the best available evidence to make the best medical decisions for his patients. His clinical interests and areas of expertise include:
Medical complications of pregnancy
Preterm birth
Multiple gestations
Fetal ultrasound imaging
Amniocentesis and percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS)
Additionally, Dr. Shanks’ experiences as a teacher allows him to take complicated medical topics and make them easier for his patients to understand. This gives them the opportunity to be active participates in their own health care.
