Bio

Dr. Alvaro Tori joined the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty in 2007 after completing his residency at IU. Originally from Lima, Peru, Dr. Tori earned his medical degree there before relocating to Indiana to pursue advanced training in pediatrics.

A dedicated educator and clinician, Dr. Tori focuses on teaching pediatric critical care within a family-centered care framework. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tori has held numerous clinical leadership positions. As Medical Director of Respiratory Care, he led or co-led the development of multiple respiratory therapy protocols, including the RT-driven albuterol weaning, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) weaning, and nitric oxide weaning protocols, among other quality improvement initiatives. He also chaired the Riley Hospital Code Blue Committee and co-chaired the Academic Health Center Code Blue Committee, where he implemented the Pediatric Early Warning Scoring System (PEWS) within the electronic medical record among other initiatives. This innovation has enhanced early recognition of pediatric patient deterioration, enabling timely intervention and improved outcomes.

Dr. Tori also served as Medical Director of Pediatric Critical Care at Methodist Hospital prior to the unit’s consolidation with Riley Hospital, and later as Co-Director of the Home Ventilator Clinic at Riley. In that role, he contributed nationally as a member of the American Thoracic Society Committee that developed the official ATS clinical practice guidelines for the care of ventilator-dependent children.

In addition to his clinical and educational roles, Dr. Tori serves as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development at IU School of Medicine. In this capacity, he helps design and implement institutional strategies that foster faculty success, professional growth, and a culture of academic excellence.

He also serves as Director of Clinical Coaching and Workforce Recruitment for Medical Student Education, where he develops initiatives and provides mentorship to support medical students’ academic and professional success throughout their training.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Tori enjoys spending time with his husband, son, and daughter. He also loves traveling back to Peru, where he celebrates and shares his Peruvian heritage.
