Bio

Dr. Angelika Martin earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the Julius-Maximilians University of Würzburg, Germany. Her doctoral research explored the effects of Pinus maritima bark extract (Pycnogenol®) on metabolic syndrome. During this time, she discovered a passion for teaching, mentoring medical and pharmaceutical students in laboratory settings.

In 2009, Dr. Martin joined the Indiana University School of Medicine–Fort Wayne as a postdoctoral fellow, shifting her research to the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration following global ischemia. Her commitment to education continued, first as a pharmacology instructor and later as course director for Introduction to Clinical Medicine II.

Following the 2016 curriculum reform, Dr. Martin took on several leadership roles. She currently serves as:

  • Course Director for Transitions 1
  • Co-Director for Foundations of Clinical Practice Year 1 and the Endocrine, Reproductive, Musculoskeletal, and Dermatologic Systems course
  • Director of the fourth-year elective Doctor as Educator
  • Lecturer and small group instructor in multiple preclinical courses

In 2016, she established the IUSM–Fort Wayne Standardized Patient Program, which she continues to lead. She also organizes interprofessional education events in collaboration with IU Fort Wayne and regional healthcare programs, promoting interdisciplinary learning among students.

In 2022, Dr. Martin co-authored a publication in Medical Science Educator exploring the use of content warnings in medical education to support student mental health. In 2025, she and her colleagues documented the experience of a medical student with severe hearing loss in one ear and profound loss in the other who successfully completed her medical education with a range of tailored accommodations. It stands as a testament to how thoughtful planning can transform access and equity in medical education.

In 2024, Dr. Martin was honored to receive the Indiana University Trustees’ Teaching Award.

Outside of her academic work, she enjoys spending time with her family, cycling, skiing, swimming, cooking, baking, gardening, and traveling.
