Bio
Dr. Aalsma is the Johnathan & Jennifer Simmons Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is Director of the Child Health Services Research Division and the Adolescent Behavioral Health Research Program. Trained as a juvenile forensic psychologist, Dr. Aalsma has focused his research on improving outcomes among vulnerable populations, including youth in the behavioral health and carceral systems. He has authored nearly 150 publications related to the health and well-being of youth, produced through 20 years of continuous extramural research funding (e.g. NIH, AHRQ, HRSA). His current research agenda includes exploring system-wide and individual efforts to improve the utilization of mental and physical health care among children and adolescents. This includes enhancing health risk screening across care settings and testing a variety of strategies to improve connection to evidence-based services for youth at all points in the legal process (diversion to incarceration). Most recently, he and colleagues have sought to improve addiction treatment options as adolescent overdose deaths have risen tremendously in the last several years.

Alliances to Disseminate Addiction Prevention and Treatment (ADAPT): A Statewide Learning Health System to Reduce Substance Use among Justice-Involved Youth in Rural Communities
The primary goal of ADAPT is to address barriers to justice-involved youth achieving the substance use disorder care continuum (i.e., referral to treatment, treatment initiation, and engagement) as identified by the Substance Use Disorder Care Cascade. We will accomplish our goal by creating alliances between the juvenile justice system and community mental health centers in 10 rural Indiana counties.

The Impact of Behavioral Health Treatment among Adolescent Offenders
This goal of this project is to assess whether adequate episodes of behavioral health treatment reduce criminal recidivism among a large population of adolescent offenders. To accomplish this, the project team will prepare and analyze the justice system and electronic health records (EHR) of more than 150,000 youth from Marion County (Indianapolis), Indiana, and will utilize a comparison group of community youth (non-offenders) to strengthen our understanding of adolescent behavioral health utilization patterns.

The Family-Based Justice Improvement Project
This project seeks to implement a bundled screening, brief intervention and treatment project for justice-involved youth with substance use disorders. Few Indiana counties have universal substance use screening or evidence-based substance use treatment. This project will improve substance use treatment and morbidity outcomes for vulnerable youth.
