My basic laboratory research involves investigation of the immunopathogenesis of sexually transmitted diseases in women. I am currently focused on exploring the immune response(s) in women infected with Chlamydia trachomatis, a major cause of pelvic disease in women that can lead to infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and an increased risk for ectopic pregnancy and HIV acquisition. In order to better understand the immune response to chlamydial infection in humans, I am using stored specimens from a large ongoing cohort study of uncomplicated chlamydia infection in women to identify novel immune correlates of protection, which will advance chlamydia vaccine development and lay the foundation for future cohort studies to further explore the mechanisms of effective immune responses to chlamydia.
