He has since held a joint appointment as a clinical staff in the Gastroenterology section at the Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC). He was promoted to Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2017. His research focuses on (i) identification of non-invasive biomarkers to screen for excessive alcohol use, (ii) basic mechanisms and translational studies to determine the pathogenesis of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), and (iii) novel therapy for ALD.  He is currently the principal investigator of several research projects funded by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (Merit Review) as well as the National Institute of Health (NIH/NIAAA).

He has written/co-written more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and 6 book chapters. He served as a standing member of the NIH HBPP study section from 2017-2021.  Currently, he serves as an Associate Editor of HEPATOLOGY and a field editor for the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.  Dr. Liangpunsakul is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and currently serves as a steering commitee member, AASLD Special Interest Groups on alcohol-associated liver disease.  He was the past President of the American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) in 2018. In May 2019, he was appointed as the Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Roudebush VMAC.

During his tenure at Indiana University, he was awarded the prestigious Indiana University Trustee Teaching Award in 2011, a Showalter Scholar award in 2017, and Department of Medicine Outstanding Mentorship Award in 2022.

Born in Thailand, Dr. Liangpunsakul completed his medical training at Prince of Songkhla University, Thailand, in 1995, where he was awarded an MD degree, first class honors.  He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2000, and Gastroenterology/Hepatology training at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis in 2003. In addition, he completed Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis (IUPUI) School of Public Health in 2003.
