Dr. Zhenhui Chen is an Associate Professor within the Department of Medicine. His research focuses on biochemical and biophysical characterizations of ion transports (pumps and ion channels) in cardiac myocytes. Dr. Chen’s research has been funded by the NIH and AHA.
Dr. Chen earned his undergraduate degree from Nankai University and his PhD degree from Indiana University. He completed his research fellowships at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Chen’s broad research interests involve biochemical, biophysical and cell biological characterizations of several key proteins in the heart. His lab carries out a multi-disciplinary study, ranging from molecular biology, protein-to-protein interactions, intracellular protein distributions and trafficking, to functional studies in cardiac myocytes and whole hearts. Recent published findings from his lab reveal a new research focus to characterize how cardiac membrane proteins are distributed to unique subcellular domains, such as sarcoplasmic reticulum, lateral sarcolemma, transverse tubules, and intercalated discs in cardiac myocytes, performing specific functions, and how misdistribution and dysfunction of these proteins might occur in cardiac diseases. The research will discover and characterize the novel role of these proteins in regulation of cardiac contraction and electrical properties in normal and diseased hearts, with potential for therapeutic intervention.
In collaboration with Dr. Rohan Dharmakumar, Chen's lab investigates dysfunctional mechanisms and possible new treatment strategies in animal models and patients with heart attack.
