Amy Beth Kressel, MD, MS, FIDSA, FSHEA is a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM).
Dr. Kressel is a healthcare leader with expertise in hospital leadership and system change. As Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship she leads programs that protect patients by reducing their risk of harm when hospitalized. She has both long-range vision and the ability to lead during crises.
Leadership Accomplishments
- Reduces patient harm and improves outcomes through Infectious Diseases expertise and collaborative leadership in Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship. Eskenazi Health’s Antimicrobial Stewardship program is the first in Indiana to be recognized as a Center of Excellence by IDSA.
- Hard-wired influenza vaccination by forming a multidisciplinary team that built an algorithm that reminded providers and guided correct vaccine choice.
- Anticipated and prepared for the COVID-19 crisis and managed the crisis through situational awareness, decisive leadership, communication, and consensus-building.
- Achieved improved survival without racial or ethnic disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic by leading multidisciplinary teams that rigorously reviewed and applied data, developed and hard-wired treatment algorithms, and continually refined treatment.
- Protected hospital employees and patients during COVID-19 via early implementation of universal mask-wearing and innovative decontamination of personal protective equipment during supply shortages.
- Mentors junior colleagues to successful careers and advancement.
- Expanded the Infectious Disease service to an additional site and increased wRVUs.

Observed COVID-19 in-hospital mortality rate was lower than most published rates. Age, but not race-ethnicity, was independently correlated with in-hospital mortality.
