Bio

Dr. Al-Haddad completed medical school and a one-year internship in Jordan before moving to the United States to pursue his Internal Medicine residency at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Following his Gastroenterology fellowship, which included advanced endoscopy training at Mayo Clinic in Florida, Dr. Al-Haddad joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 2007. He later earned a Master's degree in Clinical Research through Indiana University and the Regenstrief Institute and is currently Professor of Medicine.

During his tenure at Indiana University, Dr. Al-Haddad has served in several leadership roles, including Director of the Advanced Endoscopy/EUS Fellowship Program (2007–2014) and Medical Director of the IU Pancreas Cyst and Pancreas Cancer Prevention Program (2007–2014). He also served as Associate Clinical Director (2016–2019), Clinical Director (2019–2022), and Interim Division Director (2020–2022) before being appointed Division Director in January 2023 and named the Naga P. Chalasani Chair of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr. Al-Haddad also serves as Chief of Destination (International) Services and helped establish several innovative clinical programs between 2016 and 2020, including the Medical and Endoscopic Weight Loss Program, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Program, and the Innovative and Third Space Endoscopy Programs.

Dr. Al-Haddad's clinical and research interests focus on pancreatic diseases and gastrointestinal cancers. He is an internationally recognized expert in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and third-space endoscopy and is frequently invited to present at national and international meetings.

A dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Al-Haddad has mentored dozens of fellows and residents. He has authored more than 275 manuscripts (as of August 2023), including 18 clinical practice guidelines, and served as lead author of the first North American guideline on endoscopic submucosal dissection for the treatment of early-stage gastrointestinal cancers, published in 2023. In recognition of his expertise and contributions to the field, he was awarded Master Endoscopist designation by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) in 2026. He has also received numerous research and career development grants.

Dr. Al-Haddad served as Governor of the American College of Gastroenterology for the State of Indiana from 2019 to 2025 and currently serves as Associate Editor of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the American Gastroenterological Association's leading clinical journal.
