Bio

Makram Obeid, MD, joined Indiana University School of Medicine faculty in 2023 as an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology. He also holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Physiology. Dr. Obeid is a physician-scientist specialized in pediatric epilepsy, and he investigates the mechanisms of epileptogenesis in animal seizure models with the goal of discovering novel treatments.

Dr. Obeid obtained his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, then completed a residency in Child Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York and a fellowship in Pediatric Epilepsy at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard. As the director of the Pediatric Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Riley Children's Health, he works with a multidisciplinary team to improve the quality of life of children with epilepsy. His main clinical focus is the treatment of refractory epilepsy.

Dr. Obeid currently serves as a principal investigator in the Obeid lab in the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute. His research laboratory investigates the mechanisms of seizure emergence and the accompanying cognitive and behavioral deficits in experimental animals. The main research goal is to identify molecular targets for novel anti-seizure treatment strategies.

When he is not in his lab or in clinic, Dr. Obeid enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter.
