Bio
Devi Patra, MD, MCh, MRCSEd is an associate professor of clinical neurological surgery who joined Indiana University School of Medicine in January 2025, following the completion of his neurosurgical residency training and CAST skull base and cerebrovascular fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizonia.
Dr. Patra's impressive background includes earning his medical degree and completing a full neurosurgery residency in India in 2014. In 2016, he moved to the USA for advanced training, completing a clinical fellowship in Skull Base and Endovascular Surgery at LSU Health, Shreveport. In 2018, he joined the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix for further training, completing a two-year comprehensive fellowship in Cerebrovascular, Endovascular, and Skull Base surgery. Subsequently, he pursued ACGME neurosurgery residency training and a CAST accredited Skull Base and Cerebrovascular fellowship. During his time at the Mayo Clinic, he also served as an assistant professor in neurological surgery.
His clinical ambition is to integrate and advance open cerebrovascular, endovascular and skull base neurosurgery. His clinical expertise includes the treatment of vascular lesions such as brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations and stroke, as well as various skull base pathologies like pituitary tumors, craniopharyngiomas, chordomas, vestibular schwannomas and skull base meningiomas. One of his unique clinical interests is Teflon-free microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia.
Dr. Patra is deeply involved in neurovascular research, focusing on using data science and AI for the early detection and risk stratification of brain aneurysms and vascular lesions. While at the Mayo Clinic, he played a pivotal role in developing real-time image-guided minimally invasive intracranial hematoma evacuation techniques. His expertise extends to skull base cadaveric laboratories and augmented/virtual reality platforms, working on innovative endoscopic and microscopic approaches.
Dr. Patra has an extensive publication record, with approximately 152 peer-reviewed papers and 22 book chapters. He is an associate editor of the "Hemorrhagic and Ischemic Stroke Book" and serves as an academic editor for World Neurosurgery, PLOS ONE Journal, and Contemporary Neurosurgery. With over a hundred presentations at conferences worldwide, he is not only a prolific scholar but also a dedicated educator, committed to teaching and mentoring future neurosurgeons, reflecting his passion for education and mentorship in the field.
