Kevin Smith, MD, began his tenure at the Indiana University School of Medicine in July 2010, after completing his undergraduate studies at Anderson University from 1997-2001. He continued his medical training at Indiana University School of Medicine from 2001-2005 and completed a radiology residency there from 2005-2010.
Post-residency, Dr. Smith was named Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology at the same institution. He initially served in the community division at IU Health North Hospital, where he established a successful diagnostic radiology practice and took on multiple leadership roles, including a two-year term as president of the medical staff and chair of the credentials committee.
In July 2016, Dr. Smith joined the IU Health North Board of Directors and served as co-chair of the Quality Subcommittee. By 2018, he had become part of the Board for the Indianapolis Suburban Region. In January 2018, he assumed the role of Associate Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences.
His tenure in this role was marked by significant advancements in clinical operations and informatics, including the creation of a radiology template-Autotext library and integration of DI-COM elements into modality measurements. He also pioneered improvements in physician scheduling and staffing, developed a clinical productivity dashboard, and established a national-level continuing medical education program focusing on the department's faculty. In 2019, he contributed to the development of a leadership curriculum designed to enhance the capabilities of Division Chiefs.
In July 2022, Dr. Smith was promoted to Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Associate Service Line Leader for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. His ongoing commitment to quality and process improvement is evidenced by his involvement in various LEAN projects. Dr. Smith specializes in body CT imaging and continues to influence his field through both clinical practice and administrative innovation.
In 2023, Dr. Smith spearheaded the development and implementation of a strategy for deploying clinical AI algorithms, including both pixel-based and generative AI technologies. Under his leadership, several of these AI solutions were successfully incorporated into clinical practice. Additionally, Dr. Smith proved invaluable to the informatics team, aiding in the development of multiple applications that further enhanced the department's technological capabilities and patient care services.
