Resident Appointee
Bio
Piiamaria Virtanen, MD, earned her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. She was born and raised in Finland and moved to the United States at age 18. She pursued a career in neurosurgery due to her fascination with the complex and challenging pathologies and procedures, the intricate anatomy of the central and peripheral nervous systems, and most of all, the privilege of caring for patients with diverse neurosurgical conditions. As a neurosurgery resident at the IU School of Medicine, she has cultivated a special interest in neuro-oncology and skull base surgery. She will complete an enfolded, CAST-certified fellowship in surgical neuro-oncology during her PGY-7 year and plans to pursue additional subspecialty training through a post-graduate fellowship in skull base surgery.
Outside of her clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Virtanen enjoys traveling, strength training and weightlifting, reading, listening to podcasts, and spending time outdoors. She values time spent with friends, loved ones, and her cats, and appreciates exploring new activities and culinary experiences.
