Strawberry Shortcake Luncheon

This time-honored tradition has been a highlight of Medical Alumni Weekend ever since IU health care providers were first served the cream and crimson treat in 1947.

Enjoy a sweet tradition at our 78th Annual Strawberry Shortcake Luncheon

The Strawberry Shortcake Luncheon is an Indiana University tradition that dates to 1947, when IU doctors and nurses would gather each spring on the lawn outside Riley Hospital — or under big tents — to enjoy a sweet treat and celebrate our health care professionals.

For 78 years, the event has been a focal point for alumni gatherings. In recent years, it’s become one of the high points of Medical Alumni Weekend, when graduating classes reunite to share their special memories and celebrate all things IU. In 2025, we return to campus for this beloved tradition. Everyone in the IU School of Medicine community is invited — no RSVP required. Join us anytime during the event to enjoy our strawberry shortcake dessert made from our original 1947 recipe.
