This week, Indiana University School of Medicine released its 2024 annual report, “Promoting an Inclusive Learning Environment and Addressing Mistreatment,” part of the School’s ongoing commitment to addressing instances of mistreatment and ensuring an optimal learning environment for all its students.
We encourage you to examine the report in detail. Reports from past years are also available on the School’s Mistreatment page, along with answers to frequently asked questions and a form to report incidents.
You might ask: what constitutes mistreatment? IU School of Medicine follows the AAMC definition:
Mistreatment either intentional or unintentional occurs when behavior shows disrespect for the dignity of others and unreasonably interferes with the learning process. Examples of mistreatment include sexual harassment; discrimination or harassment based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation; humiliation; psychological or physical punishment; and the use of grading and other forms of assessment in a punitive manner.
When learners report an incident through the Mistreatment Incident Report Form, the Mistreatment System Triage Team, comprised of a small number of School leaders, thoroughly reviews, investigates, and addresses each report.
Studies indicate that the number of mistreatment incidents nationally is often underreported. The School wants to ensure a clear and safe reporting system to create a better learning environment and protect our learners.
We hope you feel comfortable reporting any instance of mistreatment and we look forward to continuing with students on having the best possible process.
