17th Annual Midwest Islet Club Meeting

Join the MIC 2025 Meeting on May 7-8, 2025

The goal of the Midwest Islet Club (MIC) is to foster greater communication and interaction between pancreatic islet cell biology investigators within the Midwest region of the United States. The meeting will be composed of both senior and junior investigators, with two keynote speakers and presentations by trainees and junior faculty. 

The IU School of Medicine, Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases and the planning committees are excited to welcome the 17th Annual MIC Meeting to Indianapolis, Indiana in 2025. The meeting will begin on May 7 at 2 p.m., allowing for travel to Indianapolis on Wednesday morning. It will conclude on Thursday, May 8, with a fun dinner event. An optional networking breakfast for trainees and faculty will also take place on Friday, May 9, from 9 to 11 a.m.

MIC 2025 meeting rates are outlined below and based on attendee status. Be sure to register by April 30, 2025, to secure your spot, and take advantage of the academic “early bird” rate available until March 15, 2025. For any registration questions, please contact Shari Parker at shupchur@iu.edu

  • Academic Institution early bird - $250 (expires after March 15, 2025)
  • Academic Institution regular rate - $300
  • Industry rate - $500

Abstracts can be submitted during the registration process or by visiting the abstract submission portal after registration is complete. Please use Arial 12-point font and save your document as a Microsoft Word (.docx) file using the following structure before submitting your abstract:

  • Title
  • Authors - [First name] [Last name]
    • Underline the presenting author's name.
  • Affiliations
    • Use superscript numbers for affiliations
  • Body
    • Limit body portion to 250 words

The deadline to submit an abstract is March 15, 2025.

There are two named awards given as part of the meeting: the Paul Lacy Medal Award for lifetime achievement in the field and the Robert Sorenson Young Investigator Award.

  • The Paul Lacy Medal Presentation and Lecture concludes the meeting and is presented to a prestigious member of the islet research community who has made substantial impact on our understanding of islet biology and who has shown a passion for training of the next generation of scientists. Recent award recipients include Drs. Rohit Kulkarni (Harvard), Maureen Gannon (Vanderbilt), Chris Wright (Vanderbilt) and Peter Arvan (Michigan). 

To be considered for the Lacy Award, qualified individuals will be expected to have carried out research having a sustained and significant impact on the islet field. This award is open to nominees at the rank of Associate Professor or above and the nomination must be accompanied by a brief description of the candidate’s outstanding research contributions.

  • The Robert Sorenson Young Investigator Award honors an investigator who is beginning their career but has already made a significant impact in the field. The winner of this award gives a talk at the end of the first day of the meeting.

Nominations for individuals at the Assistant Professor level with 5 years or less in rank are considered eligible for the award. 

The deadline to submit a 2025 Paul Lacy Medal Award and/or Robert Sorenson Young Investigator Award nomination was Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024. The Awards Committee will decide the winners and award recipients will be announced at the Annual Meeting.
