Indiana University School of Medicine trains the next generation of leaders in medical research and education. Master’s degrees

IU School of Medicine’s research-based master’s degrees provide students with a focused version of the PhD experience in a variety of academic areas, including anatomy and cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, cellular and integrative physiology, medical and molecular genetics, microbiology and immunology. The school also offers specialized master’s degrees in anesthesiology, clinical research, genetic counseling, medical science, translational toxicology, and translational science that are focused primarily on translating learned science into practice.

Combined MD/PhD program

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is a unique dual MD/PhD degree that integrates advanced clinical medical training with cutting-edge biomedical research. This program aims to deepen understanding of molecular disease mechanisms and foster the development of new therapies by combining strong clinical skills with expertise in the basic sciences.

PhD programs

The IU School of Medicine offers PhD training at the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses. In Bloomington, PhD programs are available in cell, molecular and cancer biology or anatomy education. In Indianapolis, PhD training programs include anatomy and cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, medical and molecular genetics, medical neuroscience, microbiology and immunology, musculoskeletal health, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology, and translational cancer biology.
