With only 32 students per class, medical students at the Gary campus have many opportunities to experience medical education in a personalized setting. Students in the third and fourth years of training receive one-on-one attention from attending community physicians, close involvement with a diverse population of patients and procedural skill development, including first-assisting in surgery, which is typically not available to med students at larger academic centers.
Personal Recreation
Medical students in Gary have full access to the IU Northwest campus athletic facilities located in the Savannah Fitness Center. Workout equipment and fitness classes are also available.
Extracurricular Activities
Many students at this campus participate in the Student American Medical Association, the Latino Medical Student Association and the Student National Medical Association, with a student representative elected each year to coordinate class activities and interact with local and statewide academic administrators.
Medical students in Gary are also involved with local organizations and local elementary schools, where they present health-based programs. Students share academic resources and encouragement as well as frequent trips to Chicago to decompress and strengthen classmate bonds.
