Awards and Recognition Opportunities

There are multiple opportunities for medical students to be recognized for their excellence at Indiana University School of Medicine. Below are some of the opportunities you can pursue.

Eligibility: All graduate and professional students at IU Indianapolis, including all IU School of Medicine medical students

When do nominations open? Typically in November or early December

When are nominations due? Typically in mid-December. Anyone can nominate a student, and self-nominations are accepted.

When are applications due? Once nominated, students will be able to complete an application. This is typically due in mid-January.

When are awardees notified? In mid-March, and awardees are invited to an evening award event in April

Award Description: Each year, IU Indianapolis honors 50 graduate and professional students who demonstrate excellence beyond the classroom in areas such as campus leadership, scholarly work, and community engagement.  The Elite 50 represents the best of the best among IU Indianapolis graduate and professional students and captures everything that makes our campus exceptional. This is open to all IU School of Medicine students and many of our students have been recognized in the past, including for the top award and scholarship! All questions related to IU Indianapolis Elite 50 can be submitted to elite50@iu.edu.

Eligibility: There are awards to recognize medical students as well as faculty and staff at IU School of Medicine

When are nominations due? Usually mid-April

When are awardees notified? May or June

Award Description: The annual Excellence in Leadership Awards were created to recognize the passion, hard work and success of members of our IU School of Medicine community. There are awards to recognize student events, student organizations, individual students, faculty and staff.

Eligibility: Students graduating in May of that academic year

When do nominations open? Typically in October. An announcement will be shared in the MD Student News

When are nominations due? Typically mid-January. Anyone can nominate a student, and self-nominations are accepted.

When are awardees notified? The awardee is invited to the Senior Awards and the announcement is made that night.

Award Description: This award is presented to a graduating IU School of Medicine medical student who exemplifies the core values of patient-centered health care. Dr. Keener was a highly respected expert in community-based medicine with a vision to expand medical education to include out-of-the-classroom Service-Learning experiences, which allow medical students to learn more about the communities and individuals they will serve as future health care professionals.

Eligibility: Any medical student

When do nominations open? Typically in late November. An announcement will be shared in the MD Student News

When are nominations due? Typically in mid-December. Anyone can nominate a student, and self-nominations are accepted.

When are awardees notified? In mid-March. Awardees are recognized at the senior awards in May.

Sponsored by: The United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and Indiana University School of Medicine

Award Description: This award program recognizes medical students across the United States who advance public health and those who exemplify the USPHS’ mission to protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of our nation. IU School of Medicine honors one student with this award and nominates the student to the national award competition.

Annual Senior Awards

Each year the graduating class honors outstanding IU School of Medicine faculty members for their excellence in teaching basic and clinical science and other staff members for their contributions to the class. In addition, IU School of Medicine departments and other organizations recognize graduating students for their outstanding accomplishments in medical school. These awards are announced at the Awards Celebration which is typically held the week of the Graduate Recognition Ceremony.

At the Awards Celebration, those class members who will be completing their residency as part of their military service will be honored at the Commissioning Ceremony. Graduates receiving awards will be notified in April. Classmates, friends and family are welcome to attend the celebration and reception.

The event is hosted in May and updates will be provided on the central awards celebration website.
