Our faculty provides comprehensive reproductive health care through the school's partnership with Indiana University Health. Physicians in the IU School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offer regular and consultative care at several Indianapolis hospitals, including IU Health Methodist Hospital, IU Health University Hospital, IU Health North, Riley's Hospital for Children and Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. These physicians also serve as consultants to physicians and systems throughout Indiana.

Our faculty physicians offer one of the most comprehensive and world-class reproductive health programs, including preventive and consultative services, diagnostic imaging and testing, drug therapy and surgical treatment options. As OB-GYN specialists, they personalize treatment plans to meet every patient's needs. Our physicians collaborate with expert nurses and clinical staff to create a supportive environment for patients, listening and tailoring recommendations and care plans to individual needs.

Because they teach the next generation of leaders, IU faculty physicians are well-versed in today's clinical practices and are developing promising treatment options for tomorrow. As a national leader in basic science, translational research and clinical trials, these physicians offer patients access to the latest treatment options before they are widely available elsewhere in the region.

Our Clinical Care Specialties

Gynecologic oncologists in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provide comprehensive gynecologic cancer care. Our compassionate physicians treat cervical, endometrial, gestational trophoblastic, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar cancers with industry-leading, evidence-based treatments.

One of our team's greatest strengths is its collaborative approach to caring for patients who have cancer. They partner with other oncologists and care teams to ensure patients receive comprehensive care that encompasses their wellness in all realms. Also, they provide opportunities for clinical trials not widely available at other sites throughout the state.

Our maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) faculty have advanced training in medical, surgical, fetal, obstetrical and genetic aspects of pregnancy. They also provide peer and patient education to ensure parents and babies get all necessary treatments. Our MFM providers care for pregnant people with high-risk pregnancies from preexisting conditions like diabetes, chronic high blood pressure or obesity. They also care for those with complications from previous pregnancies, having multiple babies in one pregnancy, problems with fetus growth or congenital disabilities that require more specialized care or treatments. Additionally, the department offers a variety of specialized programs, such as fetal interventionists who can treat some fetal problems in the uterus, to meet the needs of even the most complex pregnancies.

  • The Maternal Cardiac Care program is a collaboration between maternal-fetal medicine and cardiology that provides up-to-date, evidence-based recommendations for caring for patients with complex cardiac conditions.
  • The Diabetes in Pregnancy Program provides comprehensive care for patients with diabetes, including on-site diabetes education, and the Maternal Recovery Program provides social work support, mental health care and opiate replacement therapy in one location.
  • The Fetal Care Center provides access to comprehensive imaging, genetic evaluation, multidisciplinary consultation with MFM, neonatology and pediatric subspecialties, for pregnancies complicated by prenatally diagnosed congenital disabilities.  

Our minimally invasive gynecologic surgery physicians provide modern and innovative procedures for patients with surgical needs using advanced techniques to achieve a wide range of surgical techniques. One of their greatest feats is removing masses from reproductive organs without affecting those organs, making it possible for patients to conceive if they choose to in the future. These innovative procedures provide more options for people with different conditions or concerns.

Minimally invasive procedures include hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, robotic-assisted surgeries, vaginal surgeries and more. One benefit of minimally invasive gynecologic surgical procedures is that patients often experience shorter recovery times and less pain than other procedures. Because methods include smaller incisions with specialized tools, patients usually feel less discomfort after surgery and see less scarring as their bodies heal from the incisions. In addition, decreased pain can decrease the need for narcotics after surgery.

IU Health obstetricians deliver more than 5,000 babies each year. Our expert obstetricians and gynecologists provide obstetrical care to patients through IU Health and Eskenazi, including antenatal and postpartum care, prenatal genetic diagnosis and screening, pre-pregnancy examinations, prenatal visits, ultrasounds and childbirth education. Physicians work with patients to provide the best possible maternity care before, during and after childbirth.

IU Health gynecologists provide gynecologic care to patients ranging from adolescents to seniors. This care may include adolescent gynecology, routine annual exams, menopause services, premenstrual syndrome care, birth control and family planning, breast health care and more.

Our reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialists provide compassionate, evidence-based care. They treat infertility using oral medications, injections, inseminations for a partner and donor sperm and in-vitro fertilization. Additionally, they treat conditions that lead to infertility, such as polycystic ovaries syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, early menopause, hormone abnormalities and ovulation disorders.

Our urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery specialists treat various urogynecology and pelvic floor disorders. These conditions include urinary incontinence, lower urinary tract disorders, pelvic organ prolapse, defecatory dysfunction and childbirth-related injuries. Treating these conditions can restore patients' sense of control and wellness while helping alleviate embarrassment and pain associated with them.
