Obstetric Anesthesia

The Section of Obstetric Anesthesia at Indiana University School of Medicine is dedicated to providing expert, compassionate and safe anesthesia care for expectant mothers throughout labor, delivery and postpartum recovery.

Specialized Care

Obstetric anesthesia specialists work closely with obstetricians, nurses and maternal-fetal medicine specialists to ensure a smooth and comfortable birthing experience tailored to each patient's needs. This expert team of anesthesiologists and anesthetists provide comprehensive care for patients, including a full spectrum of obstetric anesthesia services:

  • Labor Epidural Analgesia — Safe and effective pain relief during labor while maintaining mobility and awareness.
  • Spinal Anesthesia — Commonly used for cesarean deliveries, providing rapid pain relief with minimal risk to mother and baby.
  • Combined Spinal-Epidural (CSE) Anesthesia — A technique that offers the benefits of both spinal and epidural anesthesia for enhanced pain control.
  • General Anesthesia for Emergency Situations — Reserved for urgent cases when rapid delivery is required.
  • High-Risk Pregnancy Anesthesia Management — Specialized care for patients with complex medical conditions, including hypertension, preeclampsia and heart disease.
