The Department of Anesthesia's pediatric anesthesiologists assess complex medical issues and provide anesthesia for children who need surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as well manage pain, providing pre- and post-operative care and manage advanced life support. Faculty physicians care for premature babies, newborns, children and adolescents for routine surgery for the ear, nose, throat, genitourinary operations, general surgery and complex operations for craniofacial reconstruction, neurosurgery and organ transplantation. The expert team of pediatric anesthesiologists is specially trained to deliver anesthetic care to children of all ages at Riley Hospital for Children, part of IU Health. Riley Hospital for Children is Indiana's largest children's hospital, which is consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report's Best Hospitals.
Indiana University School of Medicine offers a Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship program, providing comprehensive training in all aspects of pediatric anesthesiology. Graduates can expect to leave the program fully prepared in the conduct of anesthesia for neonates, infants, children and adolescents undergoing the full spectrum of surgical subspecialty procedures including cardiac, major neurologic and transplantation surgery.
