General Process for Conducting Peer Reviews of Teaching at IU School of Medicine

The faculty member wishing to undergo a peer review of teaching…

  1. Identifies a peer reviewer

    • The faculty member should attempt to identify a peer reviewer on their own, either from their department or external to their department. For details on who can be a peer reviewer and whom to ask to facilitate a review, view the Peer Review of Teaching page, starting with the “Who can conduct a peer review of teaching?” panel.

    • If the faculty member is unable to identify a peer reviewer, they may ask Faculty Affairs and Professional Development (FAPD) to facilitate a review by completing the online request for a peer review of teaching. An FAPD team member will respond to the faculty member with details about conducting the review.  FAPD schedules a meeting between you and the reviewer.

  2. Holds a pre-review meeting with the reviewer (approximately 30 minutes). The meeting should include:

    • A discussion of goals of the peer review

    • A mutual editing of the peer review template (found below) to reflect the teaching scenario and review goals

    • A sharing of teaching materials that should be included in the review

The reviewer…

  1. Conducts the review. A synchronous review should include about an hour (if possible) of observation of both the learner and faculty member.

  2. Completes the peer review form during and after the observation.

  3. Schedules a post-review meeting with the reviewee, reviewing the draft review form with the reviewee, and discussing an action plan for future improvements.

  4. Revises the completed peer review form and sends it to the reviewee. The form now becomes the property of the reviewee.

A note about the templates: The reviewer and reviewee should collaboratively edit the review template to remove items not applicable to the teaching situation being observed. You should not use the template as-is.
