I wanted to come back to Gary to be near my family, but I know now that this was the best decision I could have made. This campus has everything that could have helped me get to this point. The professors are amazing.

I will use the knowledge and experiences from the Urban Medicine Program in future patient encounters to understand the patient as a whole. By understanding my patient’s background and social determinants of health, I can build trust with a patient and deliver care to address all problems.

Radiology resident, University of Chicago
The research opportunities that I was able to take advantage of through the program were most valuable. The longitudinal, community-based project I completed had real-time implications working with patients immediately post-COVID 19 pandemic and opened the door for meaningful conversations with patients in the community. It also allowed me to partner with the local health department and gain experience working with multidisciplinary teams in research. The extent of my involvement with my project and the support and mentorship I received all throughout its development and manuscript publication ensured I played a significant role in my work. This allowed me to speak meaningfully about my work in professional settings and residency interviews and it was highlighted in nearly all my interviews with internal medicine programs.
