The Department of Medicine excels at all stages of the research pipeline from basic discovery, clinical research, and trials, through implementation science and population health. Investments in our investigators and research infrastructure have fueled exponential increases in our department’s research portfolio.
The overall research funding for the department reached $110 million in academic year 2021, up from $80 million in 2017. The department’s NIH funding of $65 million in fiscal year 2020, up from $28.5 million in 2015, placed the department ranking at 13th of all Departments of Medicine at public medical schools. In addition, the department’s scholarly record achieved all-time highs in 2020, with 3,504 total publications; 394 of these had impact factors greater than 10.
