Endocrinology

Faculty endocrinologists support IU Health Diabetes and Endocrinology and use the latest medical advances to treat disorders of the endocrine (hormonal) system, including diabetes, thyroid disease and cancer, osteoporosis, and adrenal and pituitary conditions. Services offered at the center include comprehensive diabetes education, individual consultations, diabetes prevention programs, insulin initiation and regulation, insulin pump education, gestational diabetes education, diabetes counseling and medical nutrition therapy.

Under division chief Michael Econs, MD, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism demonstrates excellence in teaching, patient care, and research. Medical school and resident education includes the Endocrinology section in the Foundation of Clinical Practice course and active endocrine rotations for students and residents. Residents taking the endocrine elective, as well as the women’s health elective, rotate through our many clinics.

Research

Endocrinology faculty and staff are actively engaged in research across the endocrinology spectrum as well as partnering with researchers from a variety of other specialties. 

Clinical Care

The endocrinology division runs a robust clinical service focused on patient care. Faculty see a wide variety of endocrine disorders through patient visits at downtown Indianapolis hospitals.

Fellowship

The Endocrinology specialty team offers a two-year ACGME-accredited fellowship program.

Each year, the Division of Endocrinology recognizes fellows and faculty members with awards for their exemplary work at Indiana University School of Medicine. 

The 2026 award for Teacher of the Year was given to Michael Econs, MD, for outstanding dedication to medical education. Dr. Econs is Distinguished Professor of Medicine and the director of the Division of Endocrinology. He earned the Teacher of the Year award after a vote by the division’s fellows. 

Rola Kwayess, MBBS, who will completed the endocrinology fellowship program in June 2026, was given the 2026 Richard B. Schnute Award. Since its creation in 2002, this award is presented to one fellow in recognition of outstanding compassion, professionalism and clinical care. The recipient is chosen by a vote of the division faculty, and the award is presented in memory of Dr. Schnute, a late professor emeritus of the division.
