Emergency Medicine Residency

Welcome to the IU School of Medicine Emergency Medicine Residency! We are excited that you are here to learn more about our program. Founded in 1976, our program has been training the best emergency physicians in the country for almost 50 years! We have graduates practicing emergency medicine across the globe, from Alaska to Florida, Washington DC to Nepal, and everywhere in between. Our graduates work in every imaginable setting, from community EDs to large academic hospitals and include a large number of educators, researchers and administrators. They frequently hold leadership positions including hospital and state level executives.

The success of our graduates starts with the outstanding clinical training that you receive at our three main sites, all level 1 trauma centers within 2.5 miles of each other with nearly 250,000 combined annual visits! Your faculty in the department are committed to your learning on every patient, providing evidence based education as well as teaching the art of medicine. Most importantly, IU has an unrivaled reputation for teaching surge management, the most important skill for an emergency physician.

As the only emergency medicine program in the state of Indiana, we pride ourselves on training our residents to be successful for a 30 year career in whatever field of emergency medicine they wish to enter and to become a leader in that field. Our three year curriculum provides a number of opportunities to tailor your program to your interests. You have three electives, ample time outside of the department to pursue your specific interests and a number of extra curricular tracks that include a pathway to developing expertise in a niche area. Our program relies heavily on resident involvement to help run the program. We have a system of resident led committees that are integral to our success. This opportunity to become involved in the program from day one helps our residents develop a growth mindset and skill set that continues to pay dividends after graduation.

Residency Programs

IU School of Medicine offers two ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency programs: a three-year emergency medicine residency and a five-year emergency medicine and pediatrics combined residency, the oldest EM/Peds program in the nation. Residents in the Department of Emergency Medicine program treat a high volume of diverse patients across three level 1 emergency departments, including the state’s only level 1 children’s emergency department. The unique scheduling of second-year residents allows for two years of senior-level opportunity in this program. Graduates gain confidence in the care of critically ill patients, and the clinical training they receive prepares them to secure positions in the practices of their choice after graduation. One of the oldest emergency medicine residencies in the nation, IU School of Medicine’s program includes more than 500 alumni practicing in 38 states. Each year, this graduate network provides support to current seniors as they transition into the next phase of their careers. The program also surveys employers who hire residency graduates to ensure the education programming remains relevant.

Educational Opportunities

Beyond clinical training, the Emergency Medicine Residency program includes eight voluntary co-curricular tracks: academic, advocacy, community emergency medicine, ED clinical practice, EMS, global health, critical care and point of care ultrasound. Residents may participate in one or more tracks to tailor their focus and gain experience prior to graduation.

All three Emergency Medicine Residency learning facilities (IU Health Methodist Hospital, Eskenazi Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health) are located on the IU School of Medicine—Indianapolis campus, in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Ranked nationally by Forbes for best places in the nation for business and careers, Indianapolis provides residents with a unique place to live and work.

Our Culture

We seek to foster an inclusive and welcoming learning environment through promotion of diversity in our faculty and residents. Our program draws residents from many backgrounds and all four corners of the United States. We promote a close-knit, collegial, and supportive program for residents of all backgrounds. We emphasize mentorship, and our learning environment focuses on developing each resident, allowing for early development and implementation of personal practice patterns.

Our goal is to train the next generation of emergency medicine leaders, and we strive to reflect that intent in our culture. From day one, residents take responsibility as the primary caretaker of their patients, with responsibilities increasing as the training progresses. Working under the guidance of our world-class educators, residents are expected to handle all emergencies. Given our significant patient volume, our residents become versed in many common and rare procedures.

The categorical emergency medicine residency at IU School of Medicine is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program with 21 positions available each year.

Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics Combined Residency

The combined emergency medicine and pediatrics residency at IU School of Medicine is a five-year, ACGME-accredited program with two positions offered each year.
