Pediatric Research Centers

The primary facility for pediatric basic science research at IU School of Medicine is the 750,000-square-foot Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research, where researchers investigate the causes and mechanisms of pediatric diseases and discover new therapies and treatments. The Wells Center is located on the IU School of Medicine Indianapolis campus and connected to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

The Ryan White Center for Infectious Diseases and Global Health, one of the largest pediatric infectious diseases programs in the United States, conducts nationally recognized research programs in malaria and HIV research. The Center is named after Ryan White, who was diagnosed with AIDS following a blood transfusion in December 1984. He was not allowed back at school and gained national attention as the face of public education about this disease.

The Pediatric Translational Research Center, located inside Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, is the primary site for pediatric patient-oriented research conducted at IU School of Medicine. This facility also houses the Children’s Clinical Research Center.

The Center for HPV Research at IU School of Medicine is a collaborative initiative to improve understanding of human papillomavirus (HPV), a cancer-causing virus. Researchers here study HPV transmission and infection as well as prevention of HPV infection and its consequences.

The Pediatric Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research (PACER) augments the Children’s Health Services Research group by targeting pediatric subspecialties. PACER compares different health care treatments, strategies and delivery mechanisms with an emphasis on patient-centered outcomes.
