Center for HPV Research

The Center for HPV Research improves understanding of HPV transmission and infection, prevention of and screening for HPV infection and HPV disease, and the health consequences of HPV infection.

Members represent a multidisciplinary group of researchers from medicine, public health policy and community engagement, health communication, psychology and epidemiology.

Under the leadership of Katy Head, PhD, and Rachel Katzenellenbogen, MD, the Center for HPV Research fosters cohesion and collaboration among investigators pursuing HPV-related research.

The center includes faculty and trainees from IU Indianapolis, IU Bloomington, Purdue University, University of Notre Dame, and Indiana State University, and nine schools within those institutions. Research by center members ranges from basic mechanistic research in the pathology of HPV to public health and health science research and community advocacy and outreach work, enabling unique opportunities for cross-disciplinary team science.

The center includes more than 40 research members that meet on a quarterly basis.

Mission and Goals for the Center for HPV Research

The overall mission of the Center for HPV Research is to conduct high-quality, collaborative HPV research that will accelerate scientific knowledge, reduce health disparities, improve clinical outcomes and lead to the reduction, and eventual eradication, of HPV-associated diseases and cancers. We are a hub for research on HPV natural history, prevention, screening, disease detection and treatment, and we support multi-disciplinary team approaches to answer key scientific questions on these issues.

Goals for this multidisciplinary center are:

  • To leverage our members’ strengths and expertise, forging hypothesis-driven research collaborations that span methodologic approaches
  • To highlight the depth and breadth of our members’ research, domestically and globally, with tangible impacts on the lives of others
  • To stand, speak and serve as experts in the field of HPV for policymakers, key stakeholders, practitioners and community members
  • To advocate for and train in clinical and public health best practices founded on evidence-based approaches to care in children, adolescents and adults
