Medical Student Clerkships

IU School of Medicine students who are interested in gaining experience in radiation oncology can take advantage of career mentorship, shadowing and formal third- and fourth-year elective clerkship rotations available in Indianapolis. Students in any phase of medical school are encouraged to submit an IU School of Medicine Career Mentor Request Form to be connected with faculty in the department for mentorship, research and shadowing opportunities.

For students in their clinical years there are multiple formal courses housed in the Department of Radiation Medicine: a month-long radiation oncology elective (course 93RT700), a four-week multi-disciplinary oncology elective (course 93ZI606), and a two-week multi-disciplinary career exploration elective (course 93CE512).

Radiation oncology is a collaborative specialty and clerkships in the department allow medical students to work on a team that includes nurses, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, physicists, administrative personnel, nutritionists and colleagues in other medical specialties.
