The Medical Physics Therapy Residency program at IU School of Medicine participates in the AAPM- and SDAMPP-sponsored MedPhysMatch program and Medical Physics Residency Application Program (MP-RAP) when open positions in the program are available. Interested applicants should submit their applications in accordance with MP-RAP.
Residents entering the medical physics residency program have a strong foundation in basic physics, documented by a master’s or doctoral degree in medical physics, physics, engineering, mathematics or other science with training equivalent to a minor physics. The successful candidate to this resident program holds a PhD or MS degree in medical physics, compatible with CAMPEP requirements and has good written as well as oral communication skills. Clinical training, research/publication record, and CAMPEP accreditation of the programs attended are considered in the selection of the medical physics resident. The selection of the candidate is made by a committee of at least five professionals affiliated with the program and include the director and the coordinator of the program. Other radiation oncology professionals (physicians, therapists, dosimetrists) may also be asked to serve on the selection committee.
Didactic Preparation
Appropriate didactic preparation for entry into a CAMPEP-accredited residency program in North America may be demonstrated automatically in one of two ways:
- Graduating from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program
- Completion of a CAMPEP-accredited certificate program (This option is open only to individuals who have a PhD in physics or a related discipline and comply with undergraduate physics coursework requirements as specified in the CAMPEP Standards for Accreditation of Graduate Educational Programs in Medical Physics.)
Applicants who have a PhD in physics or a related discipline, comply with undergraduate physics coursework requirements as specified in the CAMPEP Standards for Accreditation of Graduate Educational Programs in Medical Physics, and have other didactic preparation may be considered on an individual basis.
Some examples:
- An individual who has completed some of the required coursework in a CAMPEP-accredited graduate or certificate program and taken one or more courses outside a CAMPEP-accredited graduate or certificate program may request evaluation of individual courses by the residency program director for the purpose of accepting the course(s) as meeting entrance requirements.
- An individual who has completed some of the required coursework in a CAMPEP-accredited graduate or certificate program and taken one of more courses outside an individual courses by the GEPRC for verification of compliance with Graduate Program Standards.
Candidate Selection
Clinical training, research/publication record, and CAMPEP accreditation of the programs attended are considered in the selection of the medical physics resident. The selection of the candidate is made by a committee of at least five professionals affiliated with the program and include the director and the coordinator of the program. Other radiation oncology professionals (physicians, therapists, dosimetrists) may also be asked to serve on the selection committee. The selection committee ranks the candidates and submits the ranking as prescribed by the MedPhysMatch rules.
Match Day Notification
For future resident applicants, the program will fully comply with the Match program rules and there will be no notification letter sent from the department prior to match day. Within 10 days following match day, a confirmation letter, along with a letter of intent will be sent to the matched resident. The matched resident is asked to sign and return the letter of intent. Should the program not match an applicant, the program will retrieve names of applicants who did not successfully match with a program and consider any other qualified interested applicants. The selection and interview process will proceed similarly and applicants will be offered the position according to their rank. Applicants will be sent an offer letter via e-mail once selected and allowed a specified number of days to respond (5-10 days). Once the specified time period has expired, and the applicant has either rejected the offer or not responded, the next sequential applicant will be sent an offer letter.
