Medical Genomics

The Center for Medical Genomics at Indiana University School of Medicine is a state-of-the-art technology center that provides medical scientists with affordable access to high-quality, high-throughput genomics services. The center offers a broad range of advanced genomics technologies, including next-generation sequencing, single-cell analytics and spatial transcriptomics.

The Center for Medical Genomics was founded in 2000 by Howard J. Edenberg, PhD, with initial support from the Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund and additional funding from the Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN).

In 2016, Yunlong Liu, PhD, professor of medical and molecular genetics, was appointed director of the Center for Medical Genomics. With significant investment from IU School of Medicine and as part of the IU School of Medicine Precision Medicine program, the center substantially expanded its sequencing capacity and established itself as one of the leading sequencing cores in the Midwest.

In 2026, Hongyu Gao, PhD, and Fang Fang, PhD, were appointed co-directors of the Center for Medical Genomics, continuing the center’s commitment to advancing genomic technologies and supporting cutting-edge biomedical research.

Enhancing Biomedical Research through State-of-the-Art Genomic Technologies

With a service-first mentality and a mission to improve population health, the Center for Medical Genomics provides infrastructure and consultation for the use of genomic technology in biomedical research. The professional staff of the Center for Medical Genomics are available to investigators at all stages of the experiment, including study design, sample quality assessment, data delivery and analysis consultation. In-depth bioinformatics analysis can be further supported by the Bioinformatics Core through a fee-for-service model. This center is an Indiana CTSI shared facility open to investigators from Indiana University, Purdue University and University of Notre Dame.
