The Advanced Lung Disease and ECMO Fellowship at IU School of Medicine offers comprehensive training in the fields of lung transplant, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease. Situated within a prominent academic center, this one-year non-ACGME clinical fellowship program, located at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, primarily emphasizes lung transplant and ECMO, while allowing for significant flexibility to tailor the experience to individual interests in other advanced lung diseases (ILD, PH, ECMO).
Curriculum
The fellowship encompasses many different pathways and allows for fellows to choose a pathway that suits their individual career goals. Please see the individual curriculums for in depth reviews of each of the following pathways. All fellows of the Advanced Lung Disease (ALD) and ECMO fellowship will participate in the critical care echocardiography curriculum as well.
Rotations
Each of the independent portions of the ALD and ECMO Fellowship has it's own rotational structure, but below is a general sample rotational guide.
- One month of orientation
- One month of critical care echocardiography
- Two months of cross education between ALD fellowship
- Six to seven months of primary fellowship training in dedicated area of expertise
- Two to three months of elective time

- Lung pathology
- Palliative care
- Advanced heart failure
There are many other electives available to our ALD and ECMO fellows as well.
Research Opportunities
The fellowship program also facilitates significant research opportunities for our fellows and encourages them to join our current efforts or to create new opportunities that suit their individual needs. Some of the current T32 and ongoing research projects are in the domain of ECMO, COPD, emphysema, pulmonary hypertension, asthma, cystic fibrosis, ICU delirium, early origins of adult lung disease and critical care outcomes. Indiana University School of Medicine has vast research support that we guide our advanced lung disease and ECMO fellows through in order to get the most out of their yearlong fellowship.
