Abdominal Transplantation Fellowship

The IU School of Medicine Department of Surgery’s Division of Transplant Surgery offers this two-year fellowship program in abdominal transplantation. The emphasis of training is clinical with an orientation toward academic practice. Fellows are prepared to be competent, independent practitioners in transplantation with knowledge in all solid organs and are trained to assess patients for transplantation, manage patients intra-operatively and care for the immunosuppressed patient post-operatively.

This is one of a small group of programs in the United States that has the necessary volume of patients to train fellows in all organ systems. This fellowship program is accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and has approval to train three fellows every two years.

Clinical Experience

Training occurs at IU Health University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children. Fellows alternate between the Kidney/Kidney-Pancreas Service and the Liver/Intestine/Multivisceral Service. In addition, fellows participate in cadaveric donor procurement; living donor nephrectomy; kidney, kidney/pancreas, liver, small bowel and multivisceral transplantation; and acute and chronic surgical problems, including transplant nephrectomy, tracheostomy, fascial closure, and wound hernia repair.

Education Experience

Fellows are responsible for mentoring IU School of Medicine medical students and residents on rotation and also attend Grand Rounds and other teaching sessions.

Research Experience

Fellows in this program have opportunities during training to conduct and write clinical research papers as well as participate in laboratory research.
