Eligibility and Requirements

Interested in applying to the Cardiothoracic Surgery residency program at Indiana University School of Medicine? Please review minimum requirements for eligibility below. All applications must be received through the Electronic Residency Application Program (ERAS®). 

Minimum Requirements for U.S. Graduates

  • ERAS® application with photo
  • Letters of recommendation (three minimum)
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 score minimum: 230
  • Number of pass attempts on all three USMLE exams: 1
  • Medical student performance evaluation
  • Medical student transcripts
  • Personal statement

Minimum Application Requirements for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG)

  • ERAS® application with photo
  • Letters of recommendation (three minimum; one must be from a practicing physician in the U.S.)
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 score minimum: 230
  • Number of pass attempts on all three USMLE exams: 1
  • Medical student performance evaluation
  • Medical student transcripts
  • Personal statement
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate acquired at least two months before the anticipated residency start date
  • Visa sponsorship: J1 Visas only, no exceptions
  • MG applications must be no more than two years removed from graduation of medical school
  • S. clinical experience is not mandatory but encouraged
