Message from the Chief Fellows
On behalf of all current and past fellows, we are excited that you are considering the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program at Indiana University School of Medicine as your next step in training!
Indiana University offers a truly unique training experience for GI fellows, serving as the primary academic and tertiary care center for the entire state. In our program, fellows train at North America’s highest-volume ERCP center and a liver transplant center in the top 5 in adult liver transplant volume in the U.S. Fellows also work with world experts in colon polyp removal and national experts in IBD, fecal transplant, and motility disorders. We practice at four clinical sites, three within walking distance in Indianapolis and another 25 minutes away — these different sites allow our fellows to graduate with broad experience in caring for patients at academic sub-subspecialty centers, public hospitals, VA hospitals, and community hospitals. From day one, you will be clinically training with experts in general GI and endoscopy, pancreaticobiliary disease, and hepatology no matter what your goals are for your career.
From a research perspective, Indiana University is home to thought leaders in a breath of disciplines within GI — from large polyp removal and colon cancer prevention to drug-induced liver injury, alcohol-associated liver disease, and hepatology implementation science to motility disorders and third space endoscopy. Our fellowship program works to pair trainees with mentors that share the expertise and work to develop fellows’ careers.
Perhaps most importantly, when you come to Indianapolis for medical training, you are doing so within a supportive community of fifteen co-fellows who often become close friends. Getting started at Indiana University means looking forward to regular Foodie Club events, a group outing to a Pacers or Fever game, or a night out with friends in Indianapolis or one of the surrounding neighborhoods. Some of the best time of the week may be chatting with your co-fellows at the end of a clinic day and sharing in successes and challenges. By the time you graduate, you will leave not only with the confidence to practice gastroenterology, but also with a lifelong network of mentors and friends.
We wish you all the best in your journey ahead!
