Greetings: As Division Director of Nephrology and Hypertension at Indiana University School of Medicine, I invite you to learn about our program. As you read through our website, I hope you will see the depth and breadth of all we have to offer. We excel in all three missions: Education, Clinical care, and Research, something only a few select training programs can honestly claim. We have 52 faculty members: 33 Clinician Educators, 8 NIH or VA funded MD Scientists, and 11 PhD research faculty. We provide state of the art clinical care at diverse hospitals, with a mixture of fellow run and faculty only services. Last year our Division saw over 10,000 outpatients, and we provide care for 750 dialysis patients (over 150 on home therapies), and 200 new kidney transplant recipients. We have over 13 million dollars in extramural funding, including the prestigious O’Brien Center that provides state of the art imaging and investigation of the kidney, The Musculoskeletal Clinical Research Center, T32 NIH Training grant, and The Indiana Clinical Translational Research Institute. Our research focuses on: 1) preventing or limiting the severity of kidney disease through research on acute kidney injury, diabetes, glomerulonephritis, genetics of kidney disease, hypertension and kidney stones, 2) treating kidney disease through research in CKD, dialysis modalities, and transplantation and 3) minimizing the complications of advanced kidney disease through research on muscle wasting and nutritional disorders, hypertension in dialysis, neuropathy, altered gut microbiome, bone disease, and cardiovascular complications of kidney disease. We believe that a learning environment with greater representation of persons with diverse backgrounds fosters innovation and a deeper appreciation for the diversity of our learners, colleagues, and patients. Fellows are trained in cultural humility and antibias/antiracism through a lecture series sponsored by the Department of Medicine. Trainees also have the opportunity to receive more advanced training in DEI through the clinician educator track, diversity committee, or the Multicultural Physicians’ Alliance. The iDREAM Early Incentive Program is a program offered to underrepresented fellows in medicine to help launch their careers in academic medicine.

Applicants to the Nephrology Fellowship must have completed a three-year internal medicine training in a United States ACGME, ACGME - International, or a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program. Applicants who completed their Internal Medicine training in a non-ACGME or RCPSC accredited program will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants must be a legal citizen of the United States, permanent resident, or hold a J1 or H1b Visa. Passing scores on USMLE exams and a performance record from the applicant’s residency program are also required.
Nephrology fellowship applications are accepted only through the ERAS and we accept applications throughout the ERAS season. Interviews for the upcoming 2022-2023 fellowship cycle will be held virtually as per ASN and AAMC guidelines. Selected candidates will be contacted by division staff to participate in interviews conducted between the months of August and October. We offer our positions exclusively through the NRMP Subspecialty match.
